What You Need to Know About Litecoin (LTC)

Litecoin (LTC)

Litecoin is an independent payment network with the native LTC coin, a UTXO model, and Proof-of-Work consensus using Scrypt. Its design is similar to Bitcoin, but blocks are produced roughly every 2.5 minutes, maximum issuance is 84 million LTC, and the miner reward is periodically halved. The network also has the optional MWEB extension: coins can move between the transparent main chain and the extension block, where amounts are hidden and cut-through allows some already-spent intermediate outputs not to be stored.

What it is used for

LTC is used for transfers and settlement, payment of fees, and rewards to miners for including transactions and securing the chain. Useful measures of practical demand include the number and value of real transfers, fees as a share of miner revenue, Scrypt hashrate and difficulty, liquidity depth, and wallet and venue support for deposits, withdrawals, and MWEB. More transactions do not automatically create scarcity: the price link arises when users and services hold LTC for settlement, liquidity, or operating balances.

What can move the price

  • Broader use of LTC in transfers, payment services, and settlement channels increases the need for liquid balances; for MWEB, what matters is not only activity within the extension but also real wallet and service support for peg-ins and peg-outs.
  • Litecoin reward halvings reduce the flow of new LTC to miners, but network security depends on the overall economics of merged Scrypt mining: with the same work, miners earn Dogecoin rewards and fees as well. Hashrate and LTC selling are therefore influenced by prices and fees on both networks, not only by revenue within Litecoin.
  • The availability of trading pairs, deposits, and withdrawals determines LTC liquidity, while relative demand compared with Bitcoin, Dogecoin, and stablecoins affects whether Litecoin retains an independent role as a payment asset.

Key risks

  • Litecoin security depends on the combined profitability of merged LTC and DOGE mining. If aggregate Scrypt miner revenue and hashrate fall, or power becomes concentrated among a small number of pools, confirmations of large transfers become more vulnerable to reorganizations even if Litecoin fees remain low.
  • MWEB is optional and is not supported by every wallet or venue. In 2026, a critical validation bug allowed an unbacked withdrawal of 85,034 LTC from MWEB, and a separate failure was accompanied by a 13-block chain reorganization. Updates closed the vulnerabilities, but the incidents demonstrated the risk of bugs in extension-block logic and the network's dependence on miners and services installing fixes quickly and in coordination.
  • Litecoin's core payment use case competes simultaneously with Bitcoin, more programmable networks, and stablecoins. If faster confirmations and low fees do not produce sustained settlement demand, network turnover may translate only weakly into demand to hold LTC.

What makes it different

The closest comparison is Bitcoin: Litecoin retains the UTXO model and fixed PoW issuance, but uses Scrypt, produces blocks roughly four times as often, and has a coin cap four times as large. Unlike Monero, privacy is not mandatory across the network: MWEB is an integrated but voluntary route alongside the transparent chain. Litecoin should therefore be evaluated as an independent payment network with a short block interval and optional privacy, rather than as a general-purpose smart-contract platform or a full privacy coin.

What to check before using Litecoin

A coin price is meaningful only in context: liquidity, trading volume, volatility, market capitalisation and the venues where the asset actually trades.
