What You Need to Know About Global Dollar (USDG)

Global Dollar (USDG)

Global Dollar (USDG) is a dollar-pegged stablecoin managed by Paxos entities: Paxos Issuance Europe Oy handles issuance and redemption for holders in the EEA, while Paxos Digital Singapore Pte. Ltd. does so for holders outside the EEA, subject to applicable rules and checks. The reserves consist of U.S. dollar deposits, U.S. Treasury securities, and cash equivalents, and Paxos publishes monthly reports and independent attestations. USDG represents a redemption claim under the issuer's rules, not an ownership interest in Paxos or Global Dollar Network; holding the token does not in itself confer network membership, corporate rights, or governance rights.

What it is used for

USDG is used to transfer dollar-denominated value across supported blockchains, make payments, settle transactions, manage treasury operations, trade, and integrate with smart contracts. Verified organizations can issue and redeem USDG through a Paxos institutional account. Direct redemption for other holders depends on jurisdiction and customer verification: for example, eligible retail holders in the EU may request redemption through Paxos, while many secondary holders use exchanges, dealers, and available market liquidity. Practical use should therefore be assessed through the availability of issuance and redemption, the depth of trading pairs and pools, transfer volume, and the ability to maintain a price near one dollar on each supported network.

What can move the price

  • The operation of direct issuance and redemption through Paxos for eligible organizations: their arbitrage between primary and secondary markets helps bring USDG's market price back toward its one-dollar redemption value.
  • The adequacy and liquidity of reserves relative to the redeemable supply, along with the timeliness of monthly reports and independent attestations: this information shapes confidence in the issuer's ability to honor redemptions.
  • Demand for USDG in payments, settlement, treasury operations, and applications, together with the depth of liquidity on supported blockchains: broad counterparty availability reduces slippage and price discrepancies across venues.

Key risks

  • Issuance, redemption, and management of the reserve model are centralized with Paxos entities; an operational, banking, custodial, or regulatory failure involving the issuer or its counterparties could delay access to dollars and weaken confidence in the peg.
  • Direct access to issuance and redemption requires an applicable Paxos channel, documentation, and KYC verification. Holders without access to an applicable Paxos direct-redemption channel depend on exchanges, market makers, and available liquidity, so in stressed conditions they may have to sell USDG at a discount to one dollar.
  • USDG circulates across multiple blockchains and smart contracts: a contract flaw, an outage on a particular network, a cross-chain infrastructure problem, or fragmented liquidity could disrupt transfers and produce different price deviations on individual venues. A token with the same ticker, a third-party wrapper, or an address not listed by Paxos does not necessarily represent official USDG and should not automatically be treated as part of the unified redeemable supply.

What makes it different

Like USDC and USDT, USDG maintains its dollar peg through centralized reserves and redemption rather than crypto collateral or algorithmic stabilization. Its distinct organizational structure ties issuance and reserve reporting to Paxos entities, while distribution involves Global Dollar Network participants and third-party venues. These roles should not be conflated: USDG remains a payment stablecoin, whereas participation in the Network is arranged separately and does not arise simply from holding the token.

What to check before using Global Dollar

A coin price is meaningful only in context: liquidity, trading volume, volatility, market capitalisation and the venues where the asset actually trades.
