What You Need to Know About Zcash (ZEC)

Zcash (ZEC)

Zcash is an independent Proof-of-Work blockchain, and ZEC is its native coin for transfers, fees, and block rewards. The network uses Equihash and maintains a 21 million ZEC supply limit with periodic subsidy reductions; its key difference from Bitcoin is the ability to transact through shielded pools alongside transparent addresses. Transparent addresses reveal addresses, amounts, and history much like Bitcoin, while shielded pools prove transaction validity through zero-knowledge proofs without disclosing those data in the public ledger. The current shielded protocol, Orchard, uses the Halo 2 proof system without a separate trusted setup ceremony. A Unified Address can combine receivers of different supported types so a compatible wallet can select the best route, but the address format does not force every third-party exchange or older wallet to support shielded transfers. Zcash therefore provides a cryptographic privacy tool, while actual confidentiality depends on the complete path of funds, software, and user behavior.

What it is used for

ZEC can be held, transferred, and used for network fees through transparent addresses or shielded pools. A fully shielded transaction hides the sender, recipient, and amount on the public chain, while the encrypted memo field is available to parties with the appropriate keys. A viewing key allows transaction information to be disclosed voluntarily to an auditor or another recipient without surrendering spending authority, distinguishing controlled disclosure from publishing the entire history. In practice, a user must check whether a wallet supports Orchard and Unified Addresses, automatically shields incoming funds, and whether an exchange supports shielded deposits and withdrawals: purchasing ZEC and then withdrawing to a transparent address does not provide the same properties as an end-to-end shielded route. Support at only one endpoint is insufficient: the privacy property depends on every intermediate leg avoiding unnecessary disclosure of addresses or amounts. Network utility is better measured through the volume and share of funds in current shielded pools, the number of shielded operations, wallet and service compatibility, available liquidity, and Equihash hashrate. A total transaction count without a type breakdown does not show demand for Zcash's defining feature.

What can move the price

  • Demand for ZEC as a private settlement asset depends on how easily users can remain in Orchard: wallets with shielded defaults, Unified Address support, fast note scanning, and shielded deposits and withdrawals at services all matter. Growth in transparent turnover may improve coin liquidity but does not demonstrate adoption of the privacy function; a stronger signal is repeat transfers that are not forced to reveal the amount when entering or leaving the shielded pool.
  • Market access is determined by exchange, custodian, and payment-provider policies toward privacy-enabled coins. Trading support without shielded withdrawals increases speculative turnover while leaving utility restricted; delisting or prohibiting shielded operations simultaneously narrows liquidity and the set of private routes. Regulatory decisions therefore affect ZEC more strongly than a coin with the same issuance but no data-concealment function.
  • Halvings and block-subsidy distribution shape supply, while miner income and total Equihash hashrate determine security. Lower issuance reduces the inflow of new ZEC but also requires price, fees, and the miner share of the subsidy to sustain a sufficient attack cost. Protocol allocation of part of issuance to grants and a deferred fund also ties market expectations to the transparency of future development funding.

Key risks

  • Privacy in Zcash is not universally enabled by default for every form of use. A transparent address reveals its balance and history, while a transfer between the transparent side and Orchard may disclose the amount and give an observer points for timing and amount correlation. Address-selection errors, reused identifiers, network metadata, or a wallet without correct shielding may weaken protection even when the zero-knowledge proof works as designed. The proof validates the shielded transaction statement; it does not correct an exposed endpoint, leaked network metadata, or a mistaken user choice.
  • Legal status and venue rules can restrict ZEC access regardless of blockchain operation. Delisting, bans on private deposits and withdrawals, enhanced source-of-funds checks, or a custodian's refusal to support Orchard reduce the number of counterparties and market depth. A user may be required to disclose a viewing key or other information, and a service may decide that such disclosure is insufficient for its procedures.
  • Zcash depends on complex cryptography, node and wallet implementations, and coordinated network upgrades. An error in the proof scheme, key handling, or migration between pools could harm confidentiality or fund availability; low or concentrated hashrate reduces the PoW security margin. Decisions on subsidy allocation and the deferred fund create a separate risk because they affect both miner incentives and development resources.

What makes it different

Zcash inherits PoW, a UTXO-like monetary model, limited supply, and halvings from Bitcoin, but adds shielded pools where the network checks against double spending and enforces balance without publishing addresses or amounts. Its approach differs from Monero in mode choice and pool structure: Monero seeks to apply privacy mechanisms to all ordinary transfers, while Zcash retains a transparent side and lets compatible wallets select a shielded receiver through a Unified Address. This optionality simplifies integration with services that require transparency and permits selective disclosure through a viewing key, but fragments the anonymity set and makes user behavior part of the threat model. The same ZEC coin can therefore move through routes with materially different disclosure properties depending on wallet and service support. The presence of zk proofs should therefore not be evaluated as a binary checkbox. ZEC's central distinction appears only when the wallet, exchange, and recipient support a current shielded route without intermediate disclosure.
