Assets and data are represented as objects: operations involving independent objects owned by a single address can be processed in parallel, while transactions involving shared objects require consensus to agree on ordering. SUI is the network's native token, with supply capped at 10 billion units; its roles include gas, stake delegation, validator security, voting, and application liquidity.
What it is used for
SUI is needed to pay for computation and data storage, to stake or delegate to validators, and to participate in governance; it also serves as a base asset in network applications. Part of the storage fee goes to the storage fund, linking current data writes to validators' future storage costs. Practical demand is best assessed through gas from real applications, object creation and modification, activity in contracts using shared objects, the amount of SUI staked, stake distribution among validators, and the SUI balance accumulated in the storage fund.
What can move the price
- Growth in useful applications increases the need for SUI to pay computation and storage gas. The most direct transmission occurs when users and services need persistent operating balances and when creating and storing objects ties up part of the tokens within the storage-fund economy.
- Demand for SUI delegation determines the economic security of Proof-of-Stake and the distribution of rewards. The durability of this demand depends on application fees, staking subsidies, validator commissions, and delegation concentration, rather than nominal yield alone.
- Circulating-supply dynamics depend on unlocks of pre-created tokens, staking subsidies, and distributions from the Community Reserve. The pace at which SUI enters the market and the ecosystem's ability to absorb new tokens can therefore matter more than the unchanged 10 billion cap.
Key risks
- A significant share of maximum supply is distributed over time, including ecosystem reserves and allocations to early participants. Changes in the pace of unlocks, delegation, or reserve use can create a supply overhang and increase the concentration of economic influence.
- Parallel processing does not remove bottlenecks: popular shared objects still require ordering, while bugs in Move contracts, the object access model, or application logic can lock assets or cause their loss.
- Assets arriving from other networks depend on bridges, their validators, and smart contracts, while the network itself depends on stake distribution and validator-set availability. High Sui throughput does not offset a bridge failure or concentrated delegation.
What makes it different
Compared with Ethereum and other networks with globally shared state, Sui structures execution around objects and transaction dependencies known in advance. This allows many operations involving owned objects to be processed independently, while consensus is used where shared objects are involved; Move gives assets resource semantics. The distinction should be judged against the workload: parallelism offers a greater advantage with independent objects and less when many users compete for the same shared state.
