SOL is the native coin of the high-performance Solana network. It is used to pay base and priority fees, create and maintain accounts, interact with programs, and delegate to validators. Part of the base fee is burned, while the priority fee goes to the block producer; staking rewards are created under an inflationary model. SOL therefore connects two distinct economies: user demand for transaction execution and validator and delegator demand to secure consensus. An assessment based only on transaction counts and application popularity is incomplete unless it shows how much users actually pay, how much SOL is staked, and how reliably the network handles load.
What it is used for
Users hold SOL to submit transactions, obtain priority during congestion, and pay for program operations. Applications use SOL as base liquidity and collateral, while holders can delegate coins to a validator, help secure the network, and receive part of the inflationary rewards after the operator's commission. Relevant evidence of practical utility includes paid base and priority fees, the number of active payers, sustained application demand, the share of SOL staked, and delegation distribution. Bot activity or a brief speculative surge can sharply increase transaction counts without necessarily creating lasting demand for SOL balances.
What can move the price
- Fee-paying activity in Solana programs. Growth in DEXs, payments, DePIN, games, and other applications can increase demand for SOL for fees, priority execution, base trading pairs, and collateral. The most meaningful signals are sustained fees, repeat wallet use, and application liquidity after incentives end; free traffic and large numbers of failed transactions have a much weaker connection to the coin's price.
- The balance among delegation, liquid supply, and inflation. Staking temporarily removes SOL from immediate circulation and strengthens the economic security of consensus, but validator and delegator rewards create new coins. The active stake ratio determines how much capital shares the issuance, while fees and recipient behavior determine whether rewards become selling pressure in the liquid market.
- Network reliability and adoption of independent client implementations. Higher throughput is useful only when block production remains stable and applications turn capacity into paying demand. Broader client diversity reduces the risk of a common software defect, while scheduler and network-stack improvements help withstand peaks. An outage or a prolonged upgrade rollout has the opposite effect by undermining developer confidence.
Key risks
- A large share of stake running one client family creates common-mode failure risk: one critical bug could disrupt block production across many operators at once. Independent clients reduce this dependence only after they secure a meaningful share of real stake and withstand mainnet load. The mere existence of an alternative implementation does not protect the network from a shared defect in the dominant stack.
- High technical and financial requirements for validators can increase concentration. High-load setups call for dedicated servers, fast NVMe storage, capable network interfaces, and broadband connectivity, while operators also incur voting costs. As requirements rise, smaller participants find it harder to compete for delegation, and geographic and operator diversity may lose out to the efficiency of large infrastructure providers.
- Inflationary issuance dilutes unstaked holders if network demand does not absorb new supply. Only part of the base fee is burned, while priority fees go to validators, so even heavy activity does not guarantee declining supply. If application fees fall, users leave after an incentive cycle, or reward recipients regularly sell SOL, the gap between issuance and destruction becomes more visible.
What makes it different
Solana differs from the Ethereum-oriented rollup model by seeking to keep execution, shared liquidity, and application composability on one fast L1. Parallel program execution and low base costs suit frequent user actions, but place high demands on validator clients and hardware. SOL simultaneously pays for execution, serves as an application base asset, and secures consensus. This creates a more direct network use case than a standalone governance token, but makes SOL's value sensitive to both application quality and the resilience of a single execution layer.
