What matters about Ripple USD (RLUSD)
Ripple USD (RLUSD) is a centrally issued US-dollar stablecoin, not a form of XRP and not an algorithmic currency. Standard Custody & Trust Company and other regulated Ripple entities issue and distribute it against segregated reserves described as dollars and permitted high-quality liquid cash equivalents. Eligible institutional customers can redeem one token for one dollar after customer, wallet and compliance checks. RLUSD is issued natively on the XRP Ledger and as a token on Ethereum and several EVM networks. A shared ticker does not erase technical differences: XRPL holders establish a trust line to the issuer, while EVM users rely on the correct contract and network. The asset is best evaluated as a redeemable claim on an issuer and its reserve arrangements, not as an investment expected to appreciate beyond one dollar.
What it is used for
RLUSD can serve business payments, cross-border settlement, treasury transfers, exchange quote liquidity and compatible DeFi applications. In the direct institutional flow, a verified customer deposits fiat, Ripple mints RLUSD to a nominated wallet, and reserve funds are segregated; redemption sends tokens to the designated wallet for burning before dollars settle through banking partners. Retail holders normally use exchanges or intermediaries and may not have the same direct redemption access, so secondary-market prices can deviate even while the issuer's channel operates. The practical dashboard should compare circulating tokens with attested reserves, report timeliness, market depth around $1, liquidity by chain, mint and burn activity, payment use and the ability of arbitrage firms to move capital between venues.
What can move the price
- Short-term price deviations depend on arbitrage between trading venues and direct issuance or redemption. Verified counterparties can mint into a premium or redeem a discount, but bank hours, compliance reviews, venue limits and chain-specific liquidity slow that loop. A thin market on one network can trade away from the broader peg without proving that every RLUSD unit has lost reserve backing.
- Confidence in the peg rests on reserve composition, segregation, reporting cadence and the resilience of banking and custody counterparties. A monthly independent attestation compares assets and circulation at a stated date; it does not continuously audit every intervening transaction. Uncertainty about reserve access, issuer obligations or delayed reports can create a discount before an actual reserve loss is established.
- Integration into Ripple Payments, exchanges and on-chain protocols can deepen useful liquidity and transaction demand. Additional chains help only when canonical issuance, reliable infrastructure and market makers connect them; otherwise capital fragments. Regulatory approvals or restrictions chiefly affect who can mint and redeem directly, which determines how much arbitrage capacity can defend the one-dollar price.
Key risks
- Holders retain issuer and banking risk despite the stated full backing. Segregated accounts, short-duration assets and supervision reduce exposure, but RLUSD is not automatically a bank deposit for every wallet owner and direct immediate redemption is not promised to every exchange buyer. A bank freeze, reserve ownership dispute or operational interruption could produce a discount while claims and access are resolved.
- Compliance controls are structural, not incidental. Direct customers undergo institutional KYC, AML and sanctions screening, and wallets or transactions can require review under the issuer's obligations and the capabilities of each network. A holder should allow for freezing, refusal or delayed redemption in relevant circumstances rather than treating RLUSD as censorship-resistant digital cash.
- Multichain circulation introduces contract and operational failure modes. Sending to the wrong network, using a counterfeit address, configuring an incorrect XRPL trust line, or encountering an EVM contract or route problem can isolate funds from core liquidity. Withdrawals may stop on a single venue, causing its quoted price to break farther from one dollar than the asset's better-connected markets.
What makes it different
Relative to USDC or USDT, RLUSD is distinguished by distribution through Ripple's enterprise payment stack and by native XRP Ledger issuance alongside EVM deployments. XRPL provides issued currencies, trust lines, path-based payments and exchange functions without imitating ERC-20, although users must understand the specific issuer account. Compared with overcollateralized decentralized stablecoins, RLUSD does not depend on automated liquidation of volatile on-chain collateral; the peg relies on off-chain reserves and a regulated issuer's legal redemption process. That removes one crypto-collateral mechanism while concentrating control, compliance and counterparty exposure. Its relevant peer group is regulated fiat stablecoins, and the decisive test is reliable conversion of one token into one dollar across the actual access paths used by holders.

What to check before using Ripple USD
A coin price is meaningful only in context: liquidity, trading volume, volatility, market capitalisation and the venues where the asset actually trades.
