What to know about Pi Network (PI)
Pi Network is a layer-one blockchain whose native PI coin was initially allocated through a mobile application rather than a token sale or computational mining. Tapping the app does not make the phone validate blocks; it records participation for the reward system. Consensus is based on an adaptation of the Stellar Consensus Protocol, with nodes forming quorums informed by a trust graph assembled from Security Circles. The network enabled external connectivity in February 2025 after its enclosed Mainnet period. PI should therefore be assessed as the asset of a young open L1 that combines identity checks, migration of previously recorded balances, and applications for payments. Calling it Bitcoin mined on a phone obscures both the consensus design and the operational conditions attached to spendable coins.
What it is used for
PI is used for Mainnet transfers, payments between participants, and settlement in applications reached through Pi Browser. A user receives spendable Mainnet coins only after completing the applicable migration steps, which include wallet setup and KYC, while a number displayed in the mining app can still be an unmigrated claim. Useful adoption measures include migrated wallets, repeat on-chain transfers, independent Mainnet applications, active merchants, and nodes capable of supporting consensus. Account registrations alone do not establish payment demand. Analysts must also distinguish locked, unlocked, migrated, and merely recorded PI: those states have different effects on liquidity and selling capacity. Exchange support is meaningful only when native-network deposits and withdrawals work, not when a venue displays an internal PI balance without reliable settlement.
What can move the price
- KYC processing and later Mainnet migrations broaden the set of usable wallets while releasing coins that were recorded earlier. Utility grows when new holders repeatedly spend PI in applications or commerce; supply pressure grows when migration mainly enables selling. The informative comparison is between newly liquid coins, voluntary lockups, retention, and recurring wallet activity, rather than a cumulative migration headline by itself.
- Demand depends on whether Pi Browser applications, local merchants, and outside integrations become durable payment channels. An application launch is not enough: repeat purchases, varied counterparties, honest transaction patterns, and services that actually require PI matter more. Open Network connectivity can improve access, but weak exchanges or payment providers can still produce fragmented liquidity and unreliable price discovery.
- The system-wide base reward rate, contribution bonuses, chosen lockup settings, and rules for unverified balances shape the supply path. The maximum allocation separates mining rewards, ecosystem reserves, liquidity, and the team, yet circulating supply emerges through migration and unlocking. Changes in those flows can affect scarcity more directly than promotional community totals.
Key risks
- Access to recorded PI can depend on KYC, name matching, Grace Period deadlines, and the Mainnet Checklist. Verification errors, regional constraints, or migration delays may leave a person with an app balance that cannot be moved to a self-controlled Mainnet wallet. Identity requirements also reduce pseudonymity and create dependence on sensitive-data handling and eligibility rules.
- Decentralization is determined by independent validating nodes, quorum construction, implementation transparency, and the ability of outside operators to verify upgrades, not by app installations. The Core Team has historically coordinated software, migrations, KYC, and business access. A service failure or contested policy decision can therefore affect several layers even after external network connectivity is open.
- Users face fake deposits, unauthorized intermediaries, and confusion among native Mainnet PI, an old mobile balance, and an exchange liability. A listing does not guarantee native withdrawals. Thin order books amplify slippage, while waves of migrations or unlocks may create supply shocks for which the post-open-network trading record offers limited historical guidance.
What makes it different
Unlike Bitcoin and conventional proof-of-work networks, Pi does not ask a phone to perform energy-intensive hashing; the mobile session belongs to reward distribution and social trust, while nodes handle consensus. Although Stellar Consensus Protocol is its technical starting point, Pi adds Security Circles oriented toward individuals, an identity-gated migration process, and its own application environment. The closest test of the PI thesis is therefore not peak throughput or download count, but whether an already assembled and identified community becomes an open economy with independent nodes and recurring demand for the coin. The low entry barrier aided broad distribution, yet it also introduced dependencies on KYC, app infrastructure, and managed release of old balances that ordinary L1 launches do not share in the same form.

What to check before using Pi Network
A coin price is meaningful only in context: liquidity, trading volume, volatility, market capitalisation and the venues where the asset actually trades.
