What You Need to Know About PAX Gold (PAXG)
PAX Gold (PAXG) is a token issued by Paxos Trust Company, N.A. that represents an economic right to physical gold, not equity in Paxos, a debt claim against a mining company, or a synthetic bet on the metal. One PAXG corresponds to one fine troy ounce of gold from London Good Delivery bars held in London vaults operated by LBMA-approved carriers. Paxos terms describe the token as analogous to a warehouse receipt: the holder is the beneficial owner of a proportional interest in allocated gold, and specific bars are identified by serial number, weight, and fineness. Paxos may reallocate interests among bars during transfers, new issuance, and redemption, so the link is to a pool of specifically accounted metal but does not promise that one unchanging bar will remain permanently assigned to an address. PAXG circulates on blockchains as a divisible digital asset; the terms separately document the ERC-20 implementation on Ethereum, while the address and rules of any other supported version must be verified with Paxos.
What it is used for
PAXG is used to hold gold exposure without personally transporting and storing a bar, to transfer fractional interests around the clock, and as a traded or collateral asset on venues that have accepted the official contract itself. For an Ethereum address, Paxos provides a tool that displays the serial numbers and characteristics of allocated bars. Only verified customers can directly create PAXG and convert it through Paxos; available redemption methods, minimums, fees, and recipient checks depend on current terms. A secondary holder without that access sells through an exchange or DeFi pool and therefore depends on its spread and depth. PAXG's practical usefulness should be evaluated through three separate channels: correspondence between issued tokens and accounted fine ounces in monthly attestations, operation of issuance and redemption with the issuer, and executable liquidity on the specific network. An on-chain balance confirms ownership of the token but does not by itself prove that metal is present in the vault or guarantee that a particular holder can obtain physical delivery.
What can move the price
- PAXG's underlying reference is the spot value of a fine troy ounce of gold. Its dollar valuation is therefore affected by factors in the metal market itself: real interest rates, demand for defensive assets, purchases and sales of physical gold, and the exchange rate of the currency in which the investor measures the result. Tokenization changes the method of ownership and settlement but does not eliminate the underlying commodity's price risk or create income in addition to gold's movement.
- The token's deviation from the value of an ounce depends on access to issuance-and-redemption arbitrage, Paxos fees, blockchain transaction costs, and trading-pair depth. When only a narrow group of verified participants can complete the circuit among token, dollar, and metal, and liquidity is fragmented across networks and venues, a premium or discount may persist longer than the simple formula “one token equals one ounce” suggests.
- Confidence in the records of allocated bars, secure gold custody, and Paxos's ability to execute conversions affects the market's willingness to value PAXG near the metal. Relevant evidence includes the regularity and scope of independent attestations, agreement between accounted fine ounces and redeemable supply, availability of allocation lookup, and the absence of prolonged operational restrictions, not merely the issuer's brand recognition.
Key risks
- Full gold backing does not mean a stable dollar price and does not create a coupon or dividend. The metal's value can decline, while spreads, creation or redemption fees, and network costs worsen the result relative to the spot quotation. Paxos terms also allow a custody fee to be introduced with advance notice through issuance of additional tokens to Paxos, so the absence of such a fee at a given time cannot be treated as an immutable feature.
- The economic right to the metal is exercised through the legal and operational infrastructure of Paxos, vaults, and settlement counterparties. Verification, jurisdictional restrictions, physical-delivery minimums, bank processing, or platform suspension may make direct redemption unavailable to a particular holder. Allocated bars reduce the risk of an unallocated claim but do not eliminate issuer, custody, accounting-error, and legal-enforcement risks.
- PAXG is not a completely unadministered token: current terms allow Paxos to freeze and upgrade tokens, choose the supported branch after a fork, and comply with legal orders concerning the token or corresponding gold. The holder also assumes smart-contract, selected-network, custodian, exchange, and false or wrapped-version risks; the correct ticker does not replace verification of the contract address.
What makes it different
PAXG sits between a physical bar, a gold exchange-traded fund, and an ordinary crypto token. Unlike an unallocated metal account, its terms link tokens to allocated London Good Delivery bars and recognize a proportional beneficial ownership interest; unlike an ETF, that interest can be transferred over a supported blockchain without settlement through the fund's brokerage ledger. On-chain transfer does not, however, make the gold accessible without intermediaries: Paxos retains control over issuance, redemption, upgrades, and enforcement of restrictions, while the metal remains in professional custody. PAXG differs even more fundamentally from a dollar stablecoin: one fine ounce is the unit of backing, so the mechanism is intended to follow gold rather than hold a price near one dollar. PAXG should be compared simultaneously with physical-metal pricing, the terms of owning allocated gold, and the quality of secondary crypto liquidity; an attestation of coverage alone does not answer questions about redemption access or exit price.

What to check before using PAX Gold
A coin price is meaningful only in context: liquidity, trading volume, volatility, market capitalisation and the venues where the asset actually trades.
