What You Need to Know About Mantle (MNT)
Mantle (MNT) is the native gas asset of the EVM-compatible Mantle Network and the governance token of the broader Mantle ecosystem. Since the Arsia upgrade activated on mainnet on April 22, 2026, an L2 sequencer orders transactions, batch data is posted only to Ethereum blobs, and the removed EigenDA code path no longer participates in data availability. OP Succinct (SP1) ZK validity proofs attest to state transitions and are verified by contracts on Ethereum without the challenge period used by optimistic rollups; L2BEAT classifies Mantle as a Stage 0 ZK rollup. MNT on Mantle pays execution costs and the transaction's share of Ethereum blob-posting costs, while its ERC-20 representation on Ethereum is connected to L2 through the canonical bridge. It is neither company equity nor ETH: its economics depend on genuine network usage, gas-conversion rules, governance decisions, and movement between the two networks.
What it is used for
Users and applications need MNT to pay Mantle Network fees, while a delegated balance provides voting weight on ecosystem strategy, the treasury, and support programs. Utility is therefore assessed through the number and value of substantive transactions, fees paid in MNT, application activity, and the quality of decisions involving treasury resources. Moving MNT between Ethereum and Mantle links the asset's two representations but adds dependence on the official bridge. Fee demand should be decomposed into transaction count, gas used, and the amount ultimately charged in MNT. A Mantle fee combines L2 execution with a share of the cost of posting batch data to Ethereum blobs, while tokenRatio translates reference costs into MNT. Making each action cheaper may increase capacity without necessarily increasing total token expenditure. A faulty upgrade, delayed proof, sequencer censorship, or settlement-contract problem can interrupt inclusion or withdrawals. Onchain data availability on Ethereum reduces some trust assumptions, but the Stage 0 status reflects continuing operator powers and the absence of a fully permissionless exit path.
- The official bridge and third-party cross-chain routes create separate contract and MNT-representation risks; an incorrect address or unsupported wrapper may lead to lost liquidity.
- Voting by large balances and the treasury's significant role create risks of concentrated decisions and application dependence on incentives; after subsidies are reduced, activity and demand for MNT may prove weaker.
What makes it different
Mantle differs from other Ethereum L2s in more than its choice of gas currency. After Arsia, the current network combines OP-Stack-like EVM execution with OP Succinct ZK validity proofs and posts batch data only to Ethereum blobs; verified state settles on Ethereum without a challenge period. It is a Stage 0 ZK rollup rather than a system using an external DA layer. On L2s whose gas is paid in ETH, usage mainly creates direct gas demand for ETH, whereas Mantle expresses execution and its share of blob costs in MNT through tokenRatio. MNT also votes on treasury use, token parameters, and ecosystem initiatives. That creates a tighter token-network link, but adds governance, bridge, and conversion-parameter dependencies. The useful comparison therefore covers finality, Ethereum blob costs, sequencer powers, and actual MNT expenditure rather than the broad label "modular L2."
