What to know about Immutable (IMX)

Immutable (IMX)

IMX is the token of the Immutable gaming ecosystem, issued by the IMX Ecosystem Foundation. On Ethereum it exists as an ERC-20 token, while on Immutable Chain it serves as the native asset for gas and staking. The slug retains the historical connection to Immutable X, the project's first specialized StarkEx rollup, which was merged into the EVM-compatible Immutable Chain in early 2026. When assessing IMX, it is therefore important not to confuse the retired Immutable X infrastructure with the active network and to verify where specific gaming assets were migrated.

What it is used for

IMX pays for computation on Immutable Chain, can be staked, and can move between Ethereum and the network through the canonical bridge. Gaming studios can sponsor gas so that players do not need to buy IMX in advance, meaning product growth does not always translate into direct token purchases by end users. Utility is better tracked through gas spending, the amount staked, active wallets, and trading in gaming assets, as well as the number of games that actually use Passport, the orderbook, and Immutable Chain contracts.

What can move the price

  • activity in live games, the issuance and trading of digital items, and total IMX spent on gas, including fees paid by studios on behalf of players
  • the onboarding and retention of game developers across the integrated Immutable Chain, Passport, Checkout, and orderbook stack after the retirement of the old Immutable X
  • staking terms and the distribution of ecosystem tokens, which determine the share of IMX that is locked and the amount of supply available for sale

Key risks

  • demand depends on the ability of blockchain games to attract and retain players; a studio announcement or NFT release is not the same as a sustainable in-game economy
  • Immutable Chain, the canonical bridge, system contracts, and operator infrastructure create technical and counterparty dependencies on top of Ethereum's security
  • the merger of Immutable X into the new network requires assets to be migrated correctly; individual games may have chosen their own process for NFTs, and using the wrong network or contract address could result in loss of access to an asset

What makes it different

Immutable differs from general-purpose Ethereum L2s not only through its network but also through its vertical gaming stack: Passport abstracts wallet operations, studios can sponsor gas, and its SDK, trading orderbook, and payment tools are designed for gaming items. This reduces friction for players but weakens the simple link between more players and more direct IMX purchases, because developers often cover the costs. The 2026 network merge adds an important boundary: historical Immutable X transactions do not describe current Immutable Chain activity, and deprecated interfaces should not count as live IMX utility. A general-purpose L2 spreads execution across unrelated applications, whereas Immutable concentrates wallet, trading, and developer tooling around games. That specialization can reduce integration work for studios, but it also ties token demand to one sector. Gas and staking demand should be separated from sponsored transactions because a player can use a game without personally acquiring IMX.

What to check before using Immutable

A coin price is meaningful only in context: liquidity, trading volume, volatility, market capitalisation and the venues where the asset actually trades.
