What to know about Basic Attention Token (BAT)
Basic Attention Token is the ERC-20 utility token used by Brave's advertising ecosystem, not equity in Brave Software and not a claim on the company's revenue. Brave Ads matches ads on the user's device, while participation in Brave Rewards can deliver BAT through a connected payout account wherever the program and that payout route are supported. The same asset can be bought independently of the browser and held in a compatible wallet. BAT's primary form runs on Ethereum; Brave also uses bridged SPL-BAT on Solana for selected flows. Analysis should therefore begin with the actual commercial path rather than a broad story about an "attention market": an advertiser funds a campaign, Brave determines delivery and reward accounting, a user receives tokens, and an enrolled creator can receive a contribution.
What it is used for
BAT has three practical jobs. A Brave user may earn tokens for opting in to Brave Ads after connecting an eligible payout account. A BAT holder can send a one-time or recurring contribution to a verified creator through Brave Rewards; direct on-chain contributions are also available when a creator supplies a supported address, so that payment does not depend on an internal Rewards balance. Finally, BAT can be transferred, traded, or used like another token in compatible Ethereum or Solana applications, with the risks of the chosen network and bridge. Paid advertising campaigns, completed payouts, and creator contributions provide better evidence of use than browser installations alone: a Brave user need not enable Rewards, and exchange turnover in BAT does not prove advertiser demand.
What can move the price
- Growth in paid demand for Brave Ads can increase the amount of BAT moving through Rewards. Repeat advertiser budgets, campaign geography, and the share of users who actually connect payouts matter more than a headline count of browser installations.
- Demand for creator contributions depends on active verified channels, the convenience of one-time and recurring payments, and adoption of self-custody on-chain contributions. These flows create specific utility when people acquire or retain BAT in order to settle them.
- BAT market liquidity, access to Ethereum and bridged Solana BAT, network fees, and wallet support shape entry and exit. Technical reach is economically relevant only when it produces repeat payments instead of a brief burst of speculative activity.
Key risks
- BAT's commercial economy is closely tied to Brave's decisions. The company sets ad formats, Rewards rules, regional eligibility, and payout partners; a change in those policies can reduce useful token flow even while the Ethereum contract continues to operate.
- Receiving Rewards may require an eligible custodial or self-custody payout account and remains country-dependent. KYC, provider restrictions, account suspension, or a changed payment route create risks that do not arise from merely holding an ERC-20 token.
- BAT is a volatile cryptoasset with no obligation for Brave to redeem it at a fixed price. A mistaken transfer, compromised keys, an application or bridge failure, and high network fees can cause losses regardless of how well the advertising product performs.
What makes it different
BAT differs from general-purpose gas tokens because its original role is attached to a measurable advertising loop in a particular browser: campaign budget, private on-device ad matching, a user reward, and a creator contribution. It differs from tokenized stock because it grants no corporate vote, dividend, or claim on Brave's profit. It differs from closed loyalty points because holders can self-custody and transfer it on-chain, although earning Rewards still depends on program rules and an available payout route. The design is strongest when advertisers repeatedly purchase attention, users choose to receive rewards, and creators receive contributions they value.

What to check before using Basic Attention
A coin price is meaningful only in context: liquidity, trading volume, volatility, market capitalisation and the venues where the asset actually trades.
